SCU Solar

Lasting seven seasons, Mad Men was truly a hit and well-loved by fans, critics, and apparently the President. Even though the show came to an end earlier this year, fans are still raving about the series, and some TV lovers are just getting in on the action. The show’s momentum hasn’t slowed down since it’s end, and, if anything, talk of the show has actually picked up. But, the creators say no follow-up series are in sight, and hope to leave the storyline alone with the incredibly series finale that tied up all of the show’s loose ends.

Fans are still talking about the series, and many have admitted to re-watching (and re-re-watching) the latest episodes, but even if you’ve watched the series all the way through on repeat, there are probably some interesting things you didn’t know about Mad Men, like:

  1. In the majority of the scenes, there’s an actor smoking. Creators of the show have announced that the cigarettes were never real, and the actors were always given tobacco-free and nicotine-free herbal cigarettes. The show’s creators said they wanted to prevent the many troubles real cigarettes cause, especially the agitation and sickness that can be present during filming. Due to the massive amount of scenes that had to be shot (and re-shot) over the years, many of the actors began to admit their dislike for the fake cigarettes, with some describing it as a mixture of soap and marijuana.
  2. In a similar reveal, actors admitted all the drinks were non-alcoholic because of the amount of hours that had to be devoted to filming each day. Jon Hamm was one of the first to announce it, and confirmed that none of the cast drank alcohol on set due to the hectic setting.
  3. Surprisingly, in March of 2015, Jon Hamm also admitted that (along with his character) he had developed an alcohol addiction, even though no real alcohol was used on set. Jon soon announced his success with a 30-day rehabilitation program.
  4. While many shows take advantage of the fact that improvisation can lead to great discoveries for plot twists and further character development, Mad Men creator Matthew Weiner said that no improv is allowed, and scripts have to be followed word-for-word. This is likely because of Weiner’s plan for the show, which he made far ahead of time.
  5. Unlike some writers who let the characters and the reaction of fans guide the plot, Weiner announced in 2013 that he already knew how the show was going to end, and shared the ending with his wife and a few of the writers. He also had written the original plot for the show back in 1998, proving that he has always used a vision to guide the show, and not critic (or actor) feedback. This has proved extremely successful for Weiner.
  6. While some shows like to build press and excitement during filming, Mad Men was kept under tight wraps. Actors and guest-stars had to sign agreements stating they wouldn’t share anything about the plot or other cast members, and guest-stars couldn’t even admit they had a part on the show to anyone until after the episode aired. In between seasons, much suspense was built as fans awaited for the official announcement of who was casted.

The show’s unrivaled success is obvious to fans around the world, and the actors have all admitted that they thoroughly enjoyed their parts. While many times it has been said that the original casting was unclear (with Jon Hamm almost being denied the part), fans, critics, and previous cast members agree: Weiner and the stars did a perfect job of making the pilot into a compelling series.

With presidential attention, Mad Men made its way through years of loving fans and over 200 nominations. Today, Mad Men is still referenced by many talk show hosts, and the stars are still getting attention for their roles. Fans have continued talking about the show, and so has creator Weiner. While Matthew Weiner has said he had planned the ending well ahead of time to make sure the show stayed on track and had direction (also adding he wanted to tie up the loose ends with a quality pilot), fans are still pressing for a new season. But, Weiner has made it clear: the show has ended, but the story hasn’t. Every fan has continued their own story, and many debates have raged on about what the characters would do in a new season, and whether or not Weiner should bring the show back (with the general consensus being a “yes”).

After nearly 100 wins, Mad Men has officially transitioned into a hit show, and fans don’t seem to be letting go of it anytime soon.

5 Movie Mistakes in Marley & Me

It’s the inevitable downside to any movie production: there will always be mistakes! Mistakes abound in every movie and can range from filming mistakes—such as the accidental shot of a car in a fantasy film or the reflection of a camera man in a mirror—to continuity mistakes, such as character’s hair or clothing changing from shot to shot. Marley & Me, released in 2008, is no exception to this common occurance. Let’s take a look at some movie mistakes that can be found in the film Marley & Me.

Continuity Mistake
During the scene when Josh Grogan, his wife Jenny and Marley are taking a walk on the beach to clear the air, they are shown being near some beach debris that has washed up on the shore. However, after Josh asks: “What’s next?” the camera cuts back to the beach, and the family is no longer close to the debris.

Continuity Mistake
In a scene early on in the film, Josh is shown blindfolding Jenny before putting her in the car and driving to pick out a new puppy. When Jenny firt steps out of the car, the ends of the blindfold (which is in fact, Josh’s tie) are long and hanging down on her back. However, when they reach the porch, the blindfold suddenly changes–it has a different kind of knot, and the ends are short and sticking out on each side of her head.

Continuity Mistake
During the scene where Josh and Sebtastian have met in the office and are discussing the possibility of adopting a dog, John is shown taking off his work bag. However, at one point during the scene, John’s bag reappears, and he takes it off again.

Historical mistake
In the film, Marley is shown running on a stadium field with John. During this sceen, the scoreboard is visible behind Marley and John as they run. The scoreboard lists ‘WAS,’ or Washington. However, Washington’s team did not form until 2004–while the film is set during the early 1990s.

Continuity Mistake
During the scene where John and Jen are discussing John’s published article in the newspaper, John is shown picking up a bottle of orange juice with the cap off and pouring himself a glass. In the next shot of this scene, however, John is shown unscrewing the orange juice lid before pouring the glass.

There might be mistakes in the movie, but there’s not mistaking your love for your lab. Let the world know how much you adore them.

TV Shows That Desperately Need DVD Releases

There is nothing quite like holding a season or series box set of your favorite TV show in your hands. Although more networks are deciding to release many TV shows digitally—usually through websites like Amazon Prime or Hulu—there is something to be said of being able to own a physical, tangible copy of your favorite show. Let’s look at some of the TV shows that desperately need to be released on DVD—producers, take note!

The Wonder Years wonder-yearsThe Wonder Years was the formative television show for countless people growing up in the 80s and early 90s. But while this show is an iconic example of “coming of age” television, it has yet to get a proper DVD release. The primary reason behind this is due to the nature of older television contracts. The Wonder Years was absolutely filled with great period songs, which is now actually hindering the show’s ability to get a proper DVD release.

The cost involved in getting a music license for all of the songs used in the show would be much higher than most producers would be willing to spend. While the show is available for streaming on certain websites, much of the music (including part of the opening credits) has been replaced with cheap or public domain music.

Batman batmanNo, not the animated series–which is thankfully on DVD!–but the iconic 1960s show starring Adam West. For many people, the original show is both nostalgic and hilarious–the over the top action sequences, quirky fight scenes and cheesy dialogue certainly make for a fun viewing experience. Unfortunately, the lack of a DVD release for the Batman TV series is due to another contractual issue. The character of Batman is owned by Warner Brothers–while the TV series itself was produced by 20th Century Fox and Greenway Productions, which contracted with ABC to air the episodes. All three of these companies will need to come to an agreement before a DVD can be even considered.
King of the Hill kingofthehillThis Matt Groening production has a partial DVD release—up to season six—but a full DVD release of the series has yet to emerge. Seasons 7 through 13 have not yet been released on DVD, although some services, such as iTunes, are offering the full series for digital download.

He-Man and the Masters of the Universe

Posted scuwp98 on September 30, 2013
Posted in TV Service

I’ve seen every episode of He-Man and the Masters of the Universe yet I’m not quite sure who the Masters of the Universe were supposed to be.  His companions?  His enemies?  Skeletor and his bunch?  It is kind of confusing.  I suppose it does not matter because the show worked in spite of a lot of weird things.

I was a big collector of the toys so I guess this “advertisement” worked on me.  Sure, it was designed to sell toys but deep down it was a great show that had a constant stream of good messages, meant to teach kids right or wrong.  On the faraway planet of Eternia, Prince Adam lives with his family.  One day he stumbles upon Castle Greyskull and meets the Sorceress, who gives him the Sword of Power and tells him it is his destiny to become He-Man, protector of Eternia.

Looking back, it was very strange I never questioned the fact He-Man looked exactly like Prince Adam and no one seemed to notice at all.  At least Clark Kent wears glasses for Pete’s sake.  Not here.  Adam is just as buff as He-Man, with massive muscles that would make professional bodybuilders jealous.  In fact, every character is super buff!  Including arch fiend Skeletor and his cronies.  Even the scientist guy that might pop up every so often, would be super huge.  For no reason.  It’s in the water in Eternia.  It makes you super muscular, even without lifting weights.  Like I said, the show was strange.

Skeletor was the perfect foil for He-Man.  While the hero of this show was always so true and honest and trustworthy, the villain was always the polar opposite.  Skeletor was the comic relief of the show, which is very weird for a TV program to have.  People might claim Orko was there for comic relief but Skeletor was way funnier.  His laugh, his freak outs when his cast of incompetent henchmen messed up even the simplest tasks… he’s really hilarious.

The villains and new heroes popped up whenever they had a new toy to sell, which for a nine year old was amazing.  And so was the animation for that matter.  Try to find a better drawn 2D animated series.  The world was fully realized and deep.

At the end of each episode, one of the characters, usually He-Man, would break the fourth wall and speak directly to the audience about what we should have learned in that day’s episodes.  Lessons about friendship being important, why not to lie or cheat, the value of hard work.

I learned a lot of positive moral lessons from watching He-Man.  What other show can make that claim?
